Building the YCFCU Digital Learning Center

Yirgacheffe Union Academy Secondary School in Dilla, Ethiopia has seven working computers for more than 350 students. Proceeds from two of our contracted Yirgacheffe lots go to the school's new computer lab. Buying the coffee is the contribution. The school's budget and the running total are published on this page.

Where the money goes

Proceeds from these coffees go to the lab. Nothing is added at checkout.

The union's plan and program department manages the purchase and the build with the school's head teacher and IT staff.

Monthly updates, photos during the build, and a final accounting when students are using the lab.

Yirgacheffe Union Academy, Dilla, Ethiopia

Yirgacheffe Union Academy Secondary School opened in 2017. YCFCU's member cooperatives voted to build it at their general assembly and paid for it with accumulated Fairtrade premiums. The union puts money into the operating budget each year to keep tuition within reach for local families. Enrollment was 100 students at the opening and has exceeded 350 students.

Computer studies is now a compulsory subject on Ethiopia's national secondary exams, and the Ministry of Education standard for a school this size is 40 machines. The school currently has only seven computers that work.
