The Crown's Classes and Events

Ranging in scope from focused lecture series to hands-on experiments and small-group trainings, The Crown's classes are intended to provide a wealth of knowledge and experience to a wide range of students.

Our course list is filled with interesting material: introductory-level trainings and lectures open to enthusiasts and beginners, advanced roasting and blending workshops, in-depth tasting experiences, and innovative sessions designed to push past the traditional limits of exploring coffee in both its science and art.

Backed by Royal Coffee's decades of sourcing experience and The Crown's purpose-built lab spaces, including a fully equipped Roast Lab, Brew Lab, and Presentation Room, our instructors bring depth and specificity that's rare in coffee education. You won't leave with a certificate and a handshake. You'll leave knowing how to taste, evaluate, and think differently about coffee.

Intro to Coffee is an entry-level โ€œseed to cupโ€ interactive presentation and tasting designed to be fun and engaging and delicious!

Geared for coffee enthusiasts or new professionals looking for background information, the presentation covers coffee history, botany, farming and processing, trade and logistics, and a baseline introduction to roasting, brewing, and sensory evaluation techniques.

Youโ€™ll also be treated to a custom flight of pour-over coffee designed to augment the lecture and spur discussion.

Level up your homebrew! In this class, we explore brew theory put it into practice with different pour-over experiments and devices. You will have a chance to learn and practice different variables that contribute to coffee extraction in this class.

This course will help you begin developing your palate and expanding your vocabulary to better understand how your pour-over is performing. Whether you are new to coffee or a coffee enthusiast this class will cover in-depth on how to improve your at-home brewing.

In this in-person class, led by The Crownโ€™s Head Roaster, Doris Garrido, students can expect a healthy mix of theory and practice. Concepts like operating roasting machinery, understanding roast curves, what is happening on a chemistry level, reading the phases of roasting and how to approach coffees will be covered in this four hour class.

Class size is limited to four people to allow time for hands-on practice on both the Diedrich IR-5 or Bullet. Students have the opportunity to take home samples of their roasts to taste at home.

Garridoโ€™s expertise is rooted in experience and production, overseeing the quality of incoming Crown Jewels from sampling on Ikawa and Proaster machines, to trialing in small batches on the Diedrich IR-5, and finally at-scale on the quarter-bag Loring S15 Falcon. For the past 4 years, nearly two-hundred unique green coffees and almost 15,000 lbs of roasts have gone through this process under her oversight.

No experience necessary to fully appreciate this class. Bring your curiosity and questions! This class is taught exclusivley in spanish.

Have you ever wanted to learn how your favorite baristas make those beautiful designs? Nowโ€™s your chance to learn from our talented staff on how milk and espresso come together to make art.

This class will cover the basics of pulling shots, steaming milk, introductory latte art and advanced latte art. Spots are limited to four people so that our instructors will be able to work with everyone individually, so sign up quickly!

Ever wonder how coffee professionals make quality decisions? This is your opportunity to get first-hand experience at a cupping table, our industryโ€™s preferred format for sensory evaluation. Over the course of an hour youโ€™ll learn to evaluate fragrance, aroma, and flavor with one of our quality specialists. Youโ€™ll be guided through essential coffee quality characteristics and learn to use specific tasting techniques in this unique evaluation format.

Join us for the newest addition to The Crownโ€™s original curriculum.

The Crown is excited to offer a new introductory level class focused on the art of Espresso! In this class, weโ€™ll cover a brief history of espresso, the tools of the trade, theory around flavor, and the variables that contribute to the flavor of espresso. The class will include breaking into small groups and dialing in espressos together.

Come learn how to use professional equipment and learn how your favorite baristas dial in espresso in this two hour class!

Do I need prior coffee experience to attend a class?

Not at all. Many of our classes are designed with beginners and enthusiasts in mind, no professional background required. Each class listing clearly indicates the intended skill level, so you can find the right fit. If you're unsure, feel free to reach out to us at thecrown@royalcoffee.com before booking.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Cancellations made at least 7 days before the class date are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations within 7 days may be eligible for a credit toward a future class. If The Crown cancels a session, all registered participants will receive a full refund. Please review the individual event listing or contact us for details specific to your registration.

Can I book a private or group training session?

Yes. We offer private group trainings and consulting sessions tailored to your team's needs whether you're a roasting company looking for QC calibration, a cafรฉ team building barista skills, or a business seeking custom curriculum. Learn more on our Coffee Consulting page or contact us directly.

Is parking available?

Street parking is available along Broadway and surrounding streets. We're also accessible by public transit, the 19th Street Oakland BART station is within walking distance. We recommend arriving a few minutes early to get settled before class begins.

Do you offer any discounts for industry professionals or Royal Coffee customers?

We periodically offer promotional rates and early-bird pricing for select classes. Royal Coffee customers should contact their account representative for information on any available discounts.
