Bolivia Coffee Origin Guide: Regions, History & Flavor Profile

Bolivia is usually considered a niche origin in the specialty coffee world.Offerings from this country can befew and far betweendue to the lack of government support, it being landlocked, competing coca production, labor shortage, and extremely low production volume (85,000 kgbags for 2024).Most often used as a single originoffering forcoffee roasters, we rarely see them sold to consumers in blends because roasters and importers must be intentional about sourcing these coffees. Coffee profiles from this coffee are oftenvery sweetand clean but do not havevery strongfruity flavors.

History

History

Coffee production in Bolivia began around the 1880’s to provide coffee to wealthy landowners. The region is known for coca production, and because coffee was considered not as profitable, the transition for many farmers was a difficult one. Geography also proves to be a challenge; cherries would be picked on site but then transported to a processing station. Transportation is often a tricky variable that coffee growers have to navigate. Roads may be damaged, animals are needed to transport the coffee, weather can vary and more. All of these have the potential to impact the quality and consistency of the coffee.  

In the early 2000’s incentives and resources were provided for Bolivian producers to focus on high quality coffee production. Funded by an anti-drugs U.S program, this included building washing stations and giving farmers access to training and financial assistance. The Cup of Excellence stated in 2004 which also encouraged increase in quality. Later on, the Presidents Cup replaced the COE in 2010 which still provided a platform for producers to elevate their coffee quality. Till this day there is a lack of government support or infrastructure but despite this, growers and baristas have created a strong network.

Regions

There are a few coffee growing regions in Bolivia but they are not strongly defined as say Ethiopia or Kenya. 

 Yungas, located on the eastern slope of the Andes, on the central-west side of the country and makes up the bulk up coffee production at 95%. The region is on the west side of the country, lies on the eastern portion of the Andes mountains and produces some of the highest altitude coffees in the world at 2,300m.  

Santa Cruz is another coffee growing region on the eastern side of Bolivia and is one of the first departments on the country. The region lacks the same high elevation for production as Yungas and is a lower priority for the region compared to rice, timber and natural gas.  

Beni is another large department in the country and has a lower population compared to other areas. Because the region is so sparsely populated it can be difficult to get to the farms and cattle ranching, rice and cacao take priority for most farmers in the area.  

Bolivia is landlocked, so overland transportation to the port adds additional costs to coffee. With just 10.5 million inhabitants, it’s relatively unpopulated for how large it is, and many Native Bolivians are described as living in extreme poverty.

Processing Methods, Cultivars, and Production 

Bolivia is at such high altitude it is hard to get natural coffee up to temperature in order to ferment properly on the drying table. To combat this, some producers use an anerobic-style fermentation, extending fermentation timelines and allowing for more control.  

Coffee growing regions in Bolivia can exceed 2,300 meters; this high elevation paired with low latitude for coffee production creates a particularly interesting flavor profile.  

Coffees from this region are often known for a bright and delicate cup. Very clean and sweet, you will find lots of stone fruit and citrus complexity from these coffees. Common cultivars used in Bolivia include Typica and Caturra along with Gesha, Java, and Catuai.  

Producers often have tiny farms, around five hectares, with many small farms grouped together to contribute cherry to a single lot. If you are looking for an origin that not many specialty roasters will carry, Bolivian coffee is a great option to expand your menu offerings. Arrival season for the U.S typically happens during spring. In 2024, they had a larger than average harvest at 35,000 60kg bags in 2024. For a sense of scale, compare this to their neighbor, Peru, which exports around 4 million bags annually.
