Advanced Roasting

July 9-10

Advanced Roasting explores acid development, roast stage ratios, and profile manipulation, including transferring information from sample roasts to production and using green coffee attributes as a guide for purchasing and roast style. Led by The Crown’s Director of Roasting Candice Madison. This class is intended for professionals seeking skill-building in roasting and for students who already posses a grasp of roasting fundamentals. Registration is limited to just 6 attendees and is $650 for a day-and-a-half session.

The Coffee Buyers’ Cupping Table: The Catracha Project

July 11 from 11:00 p.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Coffee Buyers, please join us to cup preship samples from The Catracha Project, Mayra Orellana-Powell’s community in Santa Elana. Hosted by Laurel Wirth, Coffee Trader and Lead Buyer for the Catracha Project at Royal Coffee.

Public Tasting – Alternative Milks

Join us for a free event to taste a number of non-dairy milk options with and without coffee. Led by Crown barista Elise Becker.

Understanding Extraction: Cannabis & Coffee

Join Us for this Panel Discussion Made Especially for the Cannabis and Coffee Curious. Learn about how these green entrepreneurs get from raw material to finished product. Panelists include members of Nanogen, Jetty CBD, Somatik, Inc., and Ritual Coffee Roasters. This event is free and open to the public!

Introduction to Brewing

July 17 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This class is a great primer for the coffee lover who wants to take that extra step towards brewing their own tasty beverage. Get hands-on experience brewing coffees from our menu, and use our brew devices to make the best of your chosen coffee. Led by The Crown’s Creative Director Evan Gilman. This class is intended for coffee enthusiasts and is an entry-level course that may be of use for new baristas as well. Registration is limited to 8 attendees and is $75.

The Coffee Buyers’ Cupping Table: Organic Coffees

July 18 from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

How does one obtain and maintain Organic certification? It goes beyond simply avoiding synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Taste coffees from multiple origins and experience the high standards of quality possible with organic farming practices. Join us for a cupping and discussion centered around Organic certified coffees, led by Royal Coffee Trader and Certifications Specialist Rosi Quiñones. Registration is free and intended for coffee professionals who contribute to purchasing decisions.

Public Tasting – Hot vs. Cold

July 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Join us for a free event that’s all about brewing temperature. Let’s taste how the flavor of a coffee changes with the temperature of its brew water! Cold brew, flash iced, pour over, and immersion style; each brewing style has a dramatic impact on the tastes we experience. Led by The Crown’s Education & Lab Manager Chris Kornman, this event is open to the public.

 

Introduction to Espresso

July 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Love espresso, but don’t know what’s behind the process? In this course, we will detail a little of the history of espresso, as well as dabbling in extraction theory. Participants will also be able to get hands-on experience with the espresso machines in our Brew Lab at The Crown. By the end of our time together, you’ll be pulling the shots … and calling them as well! Led by The Crown’s Creative Director Evan Gilman. This class is intended for coffee enthusiasts and is an entry-level course that may be of use for new baristas as well. Registration is limited to 6 attendees and is $100.

Advanced Sensory Exercises

July 31 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Advanced Sensory Exercises is a training session including tasting lessons designed to improve the skills of coffee tasters. Together we’ll practice triangulations (coffee tasting where the evaluator must identify the one of three cups which is not like the other) and taste organic acids. The course will involve both interactive tastings and a brief overview of the relevance of certain acid types to coffee flavor, and some tricks and tips to help avoid common sensory pitfalls. We’ll also practice subtle differences of combination and concentration in the Sensory Skills exam (sweet, salty, and sour). Led by the Crown’s Education and Lab Manager Chris Kornman. This class is intended for coffee professionals and enthusiasts seeking to improve their sensory skills in an intensive tasting session.

 

Public Tasting – Brew Ratios

July 24 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

You don’t have to understand math to understand coffee, but surprisingly it can help! Join us for a free tasting of different ratios of coffee and water to experience the importance of brew ratios and understand what it means when a barista says they’re dialing in a coffee.

 

The Chain – A Conversation on the Supply Chain & a Guatemalan Cupping featuring Roasters from Across the Country.

July 25 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Join us for an exploration of the coffee supply chain, from farm to importer, roaster to consumer, at The Crown, a collaborative event co-hosted by Royal Coffee and Tradecraft Outfitters. This event is free and open to the public, with an intended audience of roasters and wholesale roasted coffee buyers.

Start your weekend off right at The Crown with this donate-what you-wish All Levels Vinyasa Yoga session led by Kristen Law. 100% on the proceeds will be donated to Grounds For Health, a global non-profit focused on reducing cervical cancer among women in the coffee growing region around the world.
