Brazil: Why It’s Worth Booking Before September

New crop Brazils won’t land until October or November. That’s normal for the harvest calendar, but if Brazil is anywhere in your blend sheet, it’s worth thinking now about how you’ll cover the months in between.

What’s going on in the market

Brazil is the backbone of most roasters’ menus, usually as the soft, sweet, nutty base in espresso blends and darker roasts. This summer, spot availability on Brazil macrolots has tightened, and roasters dealing with delayed containers or thin coverage are finding fewer options than usual when they shop around. Between now and new crop there’s a stretch of two to three months where nothing new arrives, so what’s on the ground now is what there is. This year, macrolots are where the tightness shows up most.

Why it’s in your best interest to book now

Waiting usually means fewer choices and less favorable pricing. Booking your coverage through October or November now means you know your supply and your cost for the rest of the season instead of shopping a thinner market in September. If you’re not sure how much you need to bridge the gap, ask your trader. A quick conversation about your roast volume through the fall will tell you whether you’re covered or short.
