CQI & SCA Certifications
Believing that the industry benefits from standardization and agreement, the foundational educational elements included in curriculum endorsed by the CQI & SCA are essential elements in a professional career.
Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) – The Q
As a Premier Training Campus with a licenced Q Instructor on staff, The Crown is uniquely positioned to offer one of the coffee industry’s most coveted and prestigious programs, CQI’s Q Arabica Grader Certification.
This intensive six-day lecture, practice, and testing course involves all aspects of grading, cupping, and evaluating specialty coffee. The Core of CQI’s Q Coffee System is built on the skills of the Q Grader. The objective and standardized evaluation of the Q Grader is essential to maintain the integrity of the Q Coffee system.
Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) – Coffee Skills Program (CSP)
The Crown is being built to spec in accordance with SCA requirements for a Premier Training Campus. The SCA’s CSP focuses on 6 core specialties: Introduction to Coffee, Barista Skills, Brewing, Green Coffee, Sensory Skills, and Roasting. Each of these specialties includes three stages of knowledge: Foundation, Intermediate, and Professional.
The Crown’s Authorized SCA Trainers (ASTs) offer exceptional material meeting or exceeding the SCA’s standards, and coursework in the CSP will equip students to pass the appropriate examination.
Coffee Education: Practical Training & Innovation Instruction
Ranging in scope from focused lecture series to hands-on experiments and small-group trainings, The Crown’s classes are intended to provide a wealth of knowledge and experience to a wide range of students.
Our course list is filled to the brim with interesting material, from introductory level trainings and lectures open to enthusiasts and beginners, to advanced roasting and blending workshops, in-depth tasting experiences, to innovative experiences designed to push past the traditional limits of exploring the craft of coffee in both its science and art.
Our calendar is constantly expanding and includes popular classes that explore roast profiling, sensory exercises, green coffee analysis, cup taster calibration, latte art training, defect identification, extraction theory, and much more.
In keeping with The Crown’s mission of inclusion and collaboration, we are proud to offer a limited number of scholarship opportunities, available for most classes. Please inquire directly with Chris Kornman to check for availability.
