A Roaster’s Operations Optimization Guide

By Chris Kornman

So… you started a roasting business (or at least, you’re thinking about it). As a roaster and quality specialist, I can’t tell you how many times operational inefficiencies and errors get baked into day-in day-out duties. The less time you spend scratching your head or scrambling to fix something that should’ve been taken care of months ago, the more time you’ll have to hone your craft and deliver great coffee for your customers.

Roasting coffee, like any artisanal undertaking, involves a healthy amount of perspiration to accompany your inspiration. Whether you’ve been in the business for decades or are new to the craft, you’ll likely benefit from taking a moment to assess your efficiencies, pain points, and schedules. I’ve compiled a small checklist with some priorities we believe shouldn’t be overlooked when designing or refining your roasting operations.

As intimidating as a list like this can seem at first, taking step by step efforts will ensure you easily and efficiently avoid costly mistakes.
