Harvest in\u0026amp;nbsp;Sidama\u0026amp;nbsp;occurs slightly earlier than in the more southern zones of\u0026amp;nbsp;Gedeo\u0026amp;nbsp;and\u0026amp;nbsp;Guji, and as a result the fully washed lots from here are usually the year’s very first\u0026amp;nbsp;top quality\u0026amp;nbsp;arrivals from anywhere in Ethiopia.\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;\u0026amp;nbsp;\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;Wottona\u0026amp;nbsp;Bultuma\u0026amp;nbsp;carries out activities that often go unnoticed but are crucial for small producers, including training producers in best organic practices and investing in basic infrastructure needs like road improvements and\u0026amp;nbsp;establishing\u0026amp;nbsp;local warehouses. SCFCU focuses on\u0026amp;nbsp;establishing\u0026amp;nbsp;a certification process for local cooperatives, creating micro-credit for\u0026amp;nbsp;producers\u0026amp;nbsp;and investing in social programs on a larger scale. Environmental training programs, healthcare initiatives, life insurance, and educational opportunities are just some of the ways SCFCU strives to improve the quality of life for coffee producers and their families.\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;\u0026amp;nbsp;\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;There are 1994 farmer members belonging to the Wottona Bultuma cooperative. Farmers in this area are truly smallholders, averaging less than a hectare of coffee cultivation each, in which they also produce vegetables for the household and local sale. The coop processes coffee at 4 different sites, in the Aleta Wondo district communities of Mogisa (2 sites), Bultuma, and Wotto.\u0026amp;nbsp; \u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;\u0026amp;nbsp;\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;Cherry is delivered daily to\u0026amp;nbsp;Wottona\u0026amp;nbsp;Bultuma’s\u0026amp;nbsp;processing site where it is sorted,\u0026amp;nbsp;depulped, and fermented\u0026amp;nbsp;overnight in water, which is replenished multiple times\u0026amp;nbsp;during the fermentation period to ensure clean, white,\u0026amp;nbsp;and contaminant-free\u0026amp;nbsp;parchment.\u0026amp;nbsp;Wottona\u0026amp;nbsp;Bultuma\u0026amp;nbsp;employs over 150 people at the station to oversee the constant maintenance of both parchment and cherry drying, in the case of natural processing. Once fully dried and cured, final milling for export is completed at the Union mill in Addis Ababa.\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;\u0026amp;nbsp;\u0026lt;\/span\u0026gt;\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\n\u0026lt;span\u0026gt;Wottona\u0026amp;nbsp;Bultuma\u0026amp;nbsp;was founded in 1975\u0026amp;nbsp;and functioned independently, as did many coops and processing groups back then, for lack of a greater export network. This lasted until the late 90s and until then relied\u0026amp;nbsp;largely on\u0026amp;nbsp;a system of local collectors and buyers, who would then deliver\u0026amp;nbsp;consolidated\u0026amp;nbsp;cherry to processors or export auctions. The formation of cooperative unions in Ethiopia allowed for voting power and higher farm returns from the direct exportation that unions would be capable of.
