Want to go in a different direction? When looking for a source of Guatemalan coffee, most go to western Guatemala. But the Sierra de las Minas, not far from the border of Honduras, has some epic coffee estates. Finca El Cascajal, located near the town of San Nicolas within the department of Chiquimula, covers 1900 acres with nearly 1400 acres planted with coffee and another 550 acres of protected forest. Harvesting, processing, and preparation for export are all done at El Cascajal. Given the size of the harvest this estate has all of the equipment and certifications you might only expect to find at a cooperative. And with such a large workforce, 1200 people at the peak of harvest, El Cascajal has housing, a school and health clinic. El Cascajal also produces bananas, cardamom and roasted coffee for local consumption.
