Coffee Background

Arrivals from Huila are always a special treat and even more so when they are fully traceable to a particular producer. Elizabeth Cerquer Trujillo produced this micro-lot on her 37-acre farm called el Triunfo in the municipality of la Iquira where she lives with her husband and their 3 children. Elizabeth has taken a great deal of care to intercropped his coffee with shade trees, bananas, sugarcane and yucca, which helps her better manage the health of her farm and provides her family with another source of income. Elizabeth has her own micro-mill where she carefully harvests cherries, depulps and ferments for 24 hours. After this, she washes the coffee to remove the mucilage and then gently dries it on raised beds over a period of 10 days. While Elizabeth has designed farm management and post-harvest solutions to fit her needs, she also has a strong alliance to bring her coffee to the international market and earn fair prices. She has partnered with an exporting company called San Miguel, a family owned company based in Huila that focuses on bringing traceable individual farmer micro-lots to the international market. The partnership has helped Elizabeth increase earnings from coffee sales, which means she can reinvest in her farm and strengthen his family’s livelihood.
