Coffee Background
Yemen Mocca Sanani is sourced from family owned plots located throughout the western highlands of Yemen, adjacent to the Red Sea between the city of Ta’izz in the south and Sa’dah in the north. Yemen is perhaps the most historic coffee growing region in the world, second only to Ethiopia, with a lineage spanning more than 2,000 years. Coffee production continues today with many of the same traditions dating back to the 15th century, like drying coffee naturally in the cherry on the rooftops of houses perched on the edges of steep mountain ridges. The relationship between Royal Coffee and the Abdulmajeed Ali Muslot Trading Stores (which has supplied Royal with Mocca Sanani since the 1990s) is equally legendary, a story best told by Royal’s founder Bob Fulmer. And while there is much to be said about how hard Yemeni coffee is to cultivate and import, what makes Mocca Sanani so special is that the quality hinges on a relationship of trust, which has been constant for decades despite all the odds.
