Coffee Background

The Kochere micro-region, which sits within the outer rim of Yirgacheffe growing region, has long been known as one of the best sources of coffee in the Gedeo region of Ethiopia. The combination of high altitude and iron-rich, acidic soil creates the ideal growing situation to produce the bright, floral Yirgacheffe profile. During the harvest, ripe cherries from 2000 small coffee producers are delivered to the Jet washing station where they are carefully sorted, depulped, fermented, washed and then dried on raised beds. The Jet washing station is owned by the Adulina Coffee, which was founded by Mahabub Awel, who learned the export business working alongside his father for the last 25 years. Adulina also has its own dry mill operation, which ensures traceability and quality control through to exporting. Recent changes in the Ethiopian export rules have opened new opportunities to develop more direct relationships and focus on sourcing specialty coffee and using earnings to have a social impact. Adulina Coffee has invested earnings in school construction, potable water projects and employees a fulltime agronomist to help producers with quality, productivity and intercropping.
