About the QCE Course

The QCE is a new, 3-day course in the Q Program in which students learn the critical cupping skills needed to properly evaluate specialty coffee quality. Light breakfast and lunch are included in the cost. We’ve limited this class at 6 students to ensure the best learning experience.

Who Should Attend

The QCE course is designed to be taken by a broad range of students who may be interested in evaluating coffee quality. The QCE can be completed as either a stand alone Q Arabica Cupping Essentials Certification, or as part of the preparation to take the Q Arabica Combo Training and Exam Course, along the pathway to becoming a certified Q Arabica Grader.

Q Cupping Essentials (QCE) is a stand-alone course with newly developed materials, designed for a broad range of students from enthusiasts to industry professionals. This foundational cupping course offers a very thorough understanding of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) cupping form and cupping protocols, as well as introducing the student to auxiliary sensory exercises that enhance their understanding of coffee evaluation, as well as being an excellent introduction to skills necessary to pass the full Q Arabica Combo Course.

Over three days, students will be exposed to cupping activities, and progressively and comprehensively trained on the SCA cupping form, along with important sensory references for assessing quality coffee. Those who take the course and successfully pass the tests achieve an internationally recognized Q Cupping Essentials certification

About the Instructor:

Candice Madison

Director of Roasting, Royal Coffee, Inc.

Candice Madison has worked in specialty coffee for nearly 10 years. An accomplished barista, roaster and trainer, she is a Q Arabica Instructor and SCA AST. Candice teaches at The Crown: Royal Coffee Lab & Tasting Room, as well as at Global Expo and Roasters’ Guild Retreat events. She is currently the Director of Roasting at The Crown where she is working to build and implement a comprehensive multi-level roasting course offering. She is a member of the SCA Equity Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and her vocation is the unceasing quest for quality of coffee, and sustainable improvement of the lives of those who produce it, at every stage of the supply chain through education and purposeful engagement.

Cancellation Policy

From time to time, we may need to reschedule or cancel our classes and events here at The Crown. If this is the case, we will provide as much notice as possible and will do our best to accommodate you. For our out of town guests, we strongly encourage you to use travel insurance and/or book flexible airline tickets & accommodation if your class or event is rescheduled or cancelled.

Should you need to cancel your attendance for any reason, or in the event of unforeseen circumstances, please let us know immediately and we will do our best to work with you!
