Q Arabica Combo Training and Exam Course at The Crown

Join us for a Q Arabica Combo Training and Exam at The Crown, an SCA Premier Campus located in the midst of Oakland’s vibrant coffee scene. Taught by Candice Madison, this course will make you into a highly trained and calibrated coffee taster.

About the Q Arabica Combo Training and Exam
Upon completion of the course, and with passing grades, the students may receive a Q Grader certificate, valid for 36 months. This intensive six-day lecture, practice, and testing course involves all aspects of grading, cupping, and evaluating specialty coffee.

The first three days of the course concentrate on theory and practice. The second three days of the course are a full schedule of exams. The range of exams offered will assess all sensorial abilities associated with discerning specialty coffee, including sensory taste tests, olfactory tests, and discrimination and evaluation cuppings. There will also be a general knowledge exam.

The Q Arabica Grader Training and Exams six-day course is rigorous, and consequently some students find it difficult to pass all exam portions the first time through. The final day will allow participants to retake certain tests as needed in hopes of completing the certification.

The Q Arabica Grader Training and Exam course is designed to be taken by a broad range of students who may be interested in evaluating coffee quality.

Q Arabica Grader Training and Exam Course Overview

This course consists of two complementary concepts: the first is 3-days of activities based on theory, followed by a 3-day series of exams regarding the material presented. There are a total of 20 different exams taken during the course. The purpose of the exams is to evaluate the cuppers in their overall cupping skills. The course includes various activities to test the cuppers’ skills in evaluating a coffee in a traditional cupping format: olfactory senses, green coffee grading, acid identification, basic cupping skill evaluations, sensory skills tests, and roasted coffee tests.

About the Instructor

Candice Madison
Director of Roasting, Royal Coffee, Inc. 

Candice Madison has worked in specialty coffee for nearly 10 years. An accomplished barista, roaster and trainer, she is a Q Arabica Instructor and SCA AST. Candice teaches at The Crown: Royal Coffee Lab & Tasting Room, as well as at Global Expo and Roasters’ Guild Retreat events. She is currently the Director of Roasting at The Crown where she is working to build and implement a comprehensive multi-level roasting course offering. She is a member of the SCA Equity Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and her vocation is the unceasing quest for quality of coffee, and sustainable improvement of the lives of those who produce it, at every stage of the supply chain through education and purposeful engagement.
